The world's largest greenhouse consisting of two gigantic geodesic structures: a majestic rainforest cathedral and a conservatory of fruits and flowers indigenous to the Mediterranean South Africa and California. Described as the 8th Wonder of the World the brainchild of Tim Smit the giant biomes were opened to the public on 17 March 2001 to rapturous acclaim. An old clay pit at Bodelva, near St Austell has been transformed by the construction of the largest "greenhouses" in the world containing growing plants from around the world. In the Humid Tropics Biome experience the sights, smells and sheer scale of the rainforest, packed with plants from the Oceanic Islands, Malaysia, West Africa and Tropical South America. Visit the Warm Temperate Biome to see olives, vines, citrus fruits and hundreds of colourful plants from the Mediterranean, South Africa and California. Outside walk through terraces that tell the story of plants that have changed the world and plants that may be crucial to our future. See tea bushes, plants for rope and fibre, plants for fuel, beer and brewing, apples, indigo, liquorice, plants for health and so much more. |
