Some people believe that King Arthur abandoned his sword Excalibur in Loe Pool, Cornwall’s largest natural body of freshwater. Near Porthleven, Loe Pool and Loe Bar are interesting features. The Pool is actually a freshwater lagoon, which was created when a shingle bar formed across the mouth of the River Cober, thereby damming it. Sea holly and yellow horned-poppy grow on Loe Bar - very few other plants thrive in such dry conditions - and over a hundred bird species have been recorded at Loe Pool.
